First Day of School Plan

For the first day of school, I will talk to my students in a firm, but kind, tone of voice.

I am going to have the class play two truths and a lie game and go over the rules with them. I will ask the students to arrange themselves in a circle. I will instruct each student to think of three statements about themselves. Two must be true statements, and one must be false. For each person, he or she shares the three statements (in any order) to the group. The goal of the game is to determine which statement is false. The group votes on which one they feel is a lie, and at the end of each round, the person reveals which one was the lie.

Once the students and I finish the game I will go over the classroom schedule and will continue to go over it throughout the week. I will briefly go over the procedures, rules, attention getters, consequences, and behavior expectations in my classroom. I will go into more detail about each of these throughout the week.

I will talk about Dojo points and how the students can earn them. I will also talk about the different flexible seats that are in my classroom and how they are a privilege. I will tell them how they should treat the seats and behave during flexible seating time. I will also tell the students about the different classroom jobs and how they will be rotated every three days. Then, I will use my popsicle sticks to call on a student to choose their flexible seating choice and their classroom job for this week.

I will show the students an example of my “All About Me” activity. I will have the words "teacher" and "family" and have drawings of my cats, a paintbrush, chocolate, and an airplane. Then, I will tell them why I wrote those two words and why I drew those pictures. Then, the students will grab a blank piece of paper. They will draw and write things that represent things they love and care about.

At the end of the day, I will give them a newsletter for their parents that details what they will be learning this year.
